Social Security Number

A Social Security Number (SSN) is required for everyone who works in the U.S., even non-immigrants. The number will be issued to you on a card will be your unique social security number that you will keep for life. You will need the number for many purposes in the U.S. including employment and paying taxes. A Social Security card is not a work permit. Visit the Social Security Administration's web site for more information at http://www.ssa.gov/.  You may begin the application for an SSN online:  https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/.  After submitting the form online, you will be required to go in person to the local Social Security Administration office as instructed:

You will need to bring your relevant original immigration documents with you to SSA:

  • Complete the online SSN Application Form
  • Passport
  • I-94 Record (retrieved from CPB website)
  • I-797, H-1B, O-1, or TN Approval Notice (as applicable)
  • SSN Consent Form - this form allows the Social Security Administration to fax your SSN number to KU Human Resources.

All employees must have a social security number.  Some dependent family members may be eligible to receive an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).  At KU, the Legal Services for Students office has staff members who can assist with the ITIN process.

Kansas Driver's License

You should review the website prior to going to the DMV office.  You will need to show documents to prove your legal status in the U.S. (e.g. passport, I-94 record, I-797 Approval Notice, etc.) and documents to show you are a Kansas Resident.
