Child Labor Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets 14 as the minimum age for most non-agricultural types of work but limits the number of hours that may be worked for minors under age 16. It also prohibits minors under age 18 from working in any occupation that is deemed to be hazardous.
Beyond the restrictions prohibiting work which is hazardous, particular attention must be given not to place a minor in a working situation which may also jeopardize ones morals or welfare. Proper supervisor and appropriate business related contacts need to be maintained at all times in the workplace.
Please contact Human Resources by email at hrdept@ku.edu or by phone at 785-864-4946 if your department intends to employ anyone under age 18.
