Job TitleA job title is a brief description of a position held by an employee.
Job CodeA job code is a numeric number assigned to a job title  and also indicates the type of employee classification it represents.
Job Description and Minimum Qualifications (if applicable)
  • The job description represents the minimal duties required of the position.
  • Minimum qualifications are the of education or experience and the minimum level of knowledge, skills, abilities, licenses, certifications and other job-related requirements associated with the position.
Employee Classification

There are five employee classification types:

  • Faculty: includes employees who are tenured, on the tenure-track, or non-tenured lecturers and professors of the practice who may be eligible for sabbatical and tenure, as applicable.
  • Academic Staff: includes employees such as scientists, research professors or curators who may be eligible for sabbatical, but not tenure.
  • Students: includes employees who are part-time and enrolled at the University of Kansas, is registered for classes, and whose primary purpose for being at the University is the achievement of a degree or certification.
  • Unclassified Professional Staff (UPS): includes employees who support the mission and goals of the University.
    • Unclassified Support Staff (USS): includes employees who support the mission and goals of the University.
Salary GradeA salary grade represents the minimum and maximum salaries that may be paid to an employee serving in the position. The spread between the minimum and maximum salaries is referred to as the range.
MinimumMinimum salary allowed for the position.
MaximumMaximum salary allowed for the position.
Job FamilyJob families are a group of job titles grouped together because of the similar functions they perform. Only positions that have been reviewed as part of the Classification and Market Study initiative are assigned to a job family.
FLSA StatusIndicates whether the position is exempt (salaried) or non-exempt (hourly) under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Visit the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Policy for more information.
