Classification Structure

The classification structure below is applicable to all USS and UPS positions. Staff job titles have a corresponding job family and salary structure and range. You can also view the staff job titles sorted by salary range.  For job title summaries and required qualifications, use the links below for each job family.

Job Families

Job families are groupings of similar jobs. They may be used in ongoing market comparisons among jobs. Common attributes of job families may include similar knowledge requirements, key behaviors, skills and abilities. There are often multiple job series with levels of positions within each job family that provide a framework for career progression.

Salary Structure(s)
Administrative/Management (pdf) Dedicated to the management, coordination, and oversight of the University’s business, academic, student service, public service, and research projects, programs, departments and divisions. Operations jobs support those functions through the design and direction of management processes. A
Performs and/or coordinates office and administrative duties ensuring smooth and efficient unit operations.
B
Provides guidance to students, staff and the public regarding academic policies, educational and career goals and/or personal issues. Supports students with all aspects of their University campus life.

Directly supports faculty and academic units in or is indirectly involved in the development and delivery of educational offerings and programs to the University’s broad array of students.
A
Plans, designs, manages or performs activities related to the maintenance, construction, repair or installation of facilities, grounds, infrastructure, equipment and/or vehicles.
A
Provide services relating to food preparation and delivery as well as health guidance regarding nutrition.
A
Healthcare (pdf)
Provides direct medical and psychological treatment to students, faculty and/or community members. Jobs also provide guidance to students, staff, and/or the community on physical and mental health related issues.

Provides functional and/or technical support of software and hardware in the conceptualization, creation, development, implementation, use, management, and storage of technology and computing for research and/or instruction.

Information Technology - Research/Academic Computing and Technology (pdf) Conducts research and/or provides functional and/or technical support of software and hardware in the conceptualization, creation, development, implementation, use, management, and storage of technology and computing for research and/or instruction. Acquires, catalogs, collects and distributes conventional and electronic materials. Provides assistance to patrons regarding library resources.

Supports the selection, display and presentation of cultural and scientific offerings to the University’s broad array of constituents.

Increases awareness and promotes KU's image, projects and programs through all forms of media. Supports solicitation of donor funds and creates marketing strategies. Writes, acquires and/or edits materials for distribution.

Assures, assesses and monitors all aspects of campus safety and security, orderly conduct, and adherence to laws, regulations and policies/procedures.
A
Involved in the publishing of books, journals and newspapers.
A
Research (pdf) Manages, conducts or supports research with specific reference to the collection and analysis of scientific data. C & R
Creates and develops media programming and provides the technical support for the transmission of these programs.
