Disaster Service Leave

Employees who are certified disaster service volunteers for the American Red Cross may take disaster leave if it is approved by Human Resource Management. Disaster leave will only be granted for services related to a disaster occurring within the state of Kansas and states contiguous to Kansas as directed by K.S.A. 75-5548 » and K.A.R 1-9-24 ». Disaster leave cannot exceed 20 working days during a 12 month period beginning with the first day of leave.

While on disaster service leave, the employee is not covered by the State of Kansas workers’ compensation program or the Kansas tort claims act.
