In addition they shall have an appropriate record of research and service contributions. After achieving tenure it is possible to remain at this rank indefinitely. Promotion to Librarian does not normally occur before five years of service at this rank. Failure to achieve promotion to the rank of Librarian does not preclude a later consideration. This faculty rank is equivalent to Associate professor.

Employee Classification

There are five employee classification types:

  • Faculty: includes employees who are tenured, on the tenure-track, or non-tenured lecturers and professors of the practice who may be eligible for sabbatical and tenure, as applicable.
  • Academic Staff: includes employees such as scientists, research professors or curators who may be eligible for sabbatical, but not tenure.
  • Students: includes employees who are part-time and enrolled at the University of Kansas, is registered for classes, and whose primary purpose for being at the University is the achievement of a degree or certification.
  • Unclassified Professional Staff (UPS): includes employees who support the mission and goals of the University.
    • Unclassified Support Staff (USS): includes employees who support the mission and goals of the University.
