Employee Recognition Ceremony
May 8th at 1:30, Kansas Union Ballroom

Please join us for KU's annual event to honor our faculty and staff for their years of service to the University. Service pins are given to 5, 10, and 15 year honorees, and gifts are given to those with 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55 years of service. As part of the ceremony, this past year’s Employees of the Month are recognized and the Employee of the Year winners and Team of the Year winners are announced. Tuition Assistance Deadlines

KU provides eligible employees with assistance to cover tuition for one class (up to 5 hours) per semester.  For more information about the program to include eligibility, and courses that qualify, please visit the Human Resource Tuition Assistance for Employees webpage

Applications must be received on time.  Application availability and deadlines are as follows:

Summer 2019 Semester: Online Tuition Assistance Application was made available March 1, 2019, and the deadline is April 5, 2019

Fall 2019 Semester: Online Tuition Assistance Application will be available June 1, 2019, and the deadline is July 5, 2019

Spring 2020 Semester: Online Tuition Assistance Application will be available October 1, 2019, and the deadline is November 1, 2019

GTA Evaluations due May 31, 2019

Pursuant to the Performance Evaluations for Graduate Teaching Assistants Policy, GTA evaluations for current academic year appointments must be finalized by May 31, 2019. 

Departments are required to retain a copy of the performance evaluation and supporting documents and to provide a signed copy to the GTA. The evaluation is a part of the GTA’s official work record. If the overall rating is “unsatisfactory,” the evaluation and any supporting documents (e.g., counseling letters, goals, etc.) must be submitted to Human Resource Management (HRM).

In previous years HRM has reached out to faculty supervisors of record directly to request a listing of all GTAs that have been evaluated to include name, department, evaluation dates, and overall rating.  This year HRM does not require such a list, and will not be reaching out directly to faculty supervisors.  We ask that departments independently ensure that GTA evaluations are completed and delivered following the requirements contained in the Performance Evaluations for Graduate Teaching Assistants Policy and Section Article 5, Section 9 (page 11 of 30) of the GTAC/AFT-Ks MOA, and track and retain the evaluations at a departmental level.

HRM will be reaching out to Graduate Coordinators.  Please share this information as appropriate with other faculty or staff in your unit who may be involved in performance evaluations for GTAs.

Performance Management System Goal Setting

At this time, all Staff University-wide should be using the Performance Management System, in partnership with their supervisors to establish goals for 2018.  More information about the Performance Management System can be found on the Human Resources Website. Training materials can be found here:

HR/Pay Self Service
More than just reporting time and absences taken

Please take a moment to validate your work location(s) (room and building) in the Self Service> Personal Information>KU Directory Pages direct link: HR/Pay Directory Page.  If you work outside our building list, please look under OTH- to find other states or locations listed. (HR/Pay is no longer the source for work phone as this is within the Skype system.) Location data is important for emergency management, targeted notifications, federal reporting as well as accurate directory data.

Additional personal data is available for review under Self Service > Personal Information link: HR/Pay Personal Data Menu.

State of Kansas System (SHARP) Self Service Upgrade
(W-2 and access)

The State is updating their system (SHaRP) from March 28 to April 1, 2019 and users will not have access. SHaRP is used by KU employees for accessing W-2s. SHaRP is to be available on April 2, 2019. After the update, the system will be in “fluid” format.  Fluid allows the page to format to whatever size of device is being used. Fluid pages are a collection of tiles (boxes) that take a user directly to a page or to a collection of menu items. After the upgrade, users will select the State Employee Self Service tile (box) and then the user will select W-2 tile (box) labeled W-2: Consent, Reissue, Forms. Please validate that your email displayed on the tile (box) labeled My System Profile is correct. Select this tile to update if needed. Please follow the directions on the Payroll website if you need assistance with your password.  Please contact payroll@ku.edu with any questions regarding the W-2.

HRM Retirements

Ola Faucher, longtime director of Human Resource Management, will retire from KU at the end of May.

As director since 1998, Ola has led significant change within HRM. She played a key role in transitioning KU away from the state civil service classified system, providing the university greater flexibility to improve pay and working conditions and remove barriers in managing job titles. In 2009, Ola sponsored the modification of the KU Nondiscrimination Policy to include gender identity and gender expression as recommended by the Student Senate. And, she led KU’s first-ever job classification and market study to develop an equitable, consistent and competitive classification and compensation plan to ensure internal equity between positions and achieve competitive pay for each position relative to the job market. Along with student organizers and campus and community partners, Ola also had a key leadership role in implementing Tobacco Free KU.If you would like to honor Ola for her many contributions to KU, please make a donation to the Watkins Hall Alumnae 36169 Scholarship or the Rosalie Lanier Gray KU Staff Assistance Fund.

Dawna Groninger will be retiring April 19, 2019.  Dawna has been a member of the HR/Pay team for the past 8 years. She has been an invaluable resource during the PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 reimplementation and for all the subsequent support and projects that have followed. Dawna has worked for the State of Kansas for 29 years and 28 of those years here at KU.  Thank you Dawna!

New Faces of HRM

Holly Zane has been promoted to Associate Director of Human Resources for Employee Relations. Holly replaces Allen Humphrey, who left KU in December.

Holly was most recently Employee Relations Specialist Senior at KU. She joined the University in 2014 after eight years as an HR Manager with the Kansas Department of Corrections. Holly earned a bachelor’s in English and a J.D. at KU. She has served on the School of Law’s Diversity Advisory Council for the past 10 years, and is a member of KU’s Native Faculty and Staff Council. Holly is Wyandot/Wandat (Bear Clan).

Melissa Cole as HRM's new Benefits Manager

Melissa started at KU with the Benefits team in 2010. She moved to the ROC in 2012 and to the SSC in 2014. She was most recently an HR Coordinator with the Campus Administration and Operations SSC.

Wellness Fair

Faculty and staff are invited to attend on Wednesday, April 10th from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Kansas Memorial Union.  State of Kansas employees may earn a HealthQuest point for attending and admission is free!  Attendees can get free swag, massages, acupuncture, and a wealth of information from KU partners and the local community.
