Stress and Mental Health Support During Crises

Upheaval and uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus has brought stress, anxiety and even fear. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential, free service that provides benefits-eligible KU employees and their immediate family members with professional counseling and referral services for help in dealing with life’s challenges.

Today, we find ourselves in a challenging situation. Our work and personal lives have been upended by this crisis. While this is a shared experience, the difficulties we each face are unique to our individual circumstances. Working at home might cause feelings of isolation from not being around other people. Or, working from home with kids and/or a spouse in the house can create more stress. Mission essential KU staff who are working on campus may feel vulnerable. And, many faculty and staff are concerned about elderly parents or their own young kids or grandkids. Beyond health and safety concerns, financial uncertainties can add to the stress. Even though KU has committed to paying employees, employees may have family members facing reduced hours or job loss.

The Employee Assistance Program can help you appropriately address these and other concerns. EAP counselors provide short-term counseling (up to eight sessions per issue) and/or referral to other professional resources. The EAP is available 24/7 by calling 1-888-275-1205 (option 1) or logging into www.guidanceresources.com with company ID SOKEAP. TDD service for those with a hearing impairment is available at 800-697-0353.

Telehealth Services

Given the nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, seeking in-person medical care has the potential to further spread the virus. The State Employee Health Plan partners with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas to provide Telehealth services with a virtual doctor’s office. There is 24/7/365 access to this service. Your cost share will be waived for any Telehealth service.

Both Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas and Aetna offer virtual doctors’ visits with licensed medical providers via the internet or your smartphone, available 24/7.  For details, visit the appropriate link for your health plan: BCBKS Members | Aetna Members.
